The Magic Hour
Photography by Pat Mazzera
For San Francisco-based photographer Pat Mazzera, timing is everything. To capture this image of Alameda’s iconic Eagles Hall, it all came down to the “magic hour,” an elusive, fleeting window of time when the setting sun creates an arresting interplay between light and dark. “It’s a waiting game,” says Mazzera, who took this photograph while on assignment for Alameda Magazine, using the contrasting colors to play up the old-fashioned building’s distinctive neon sign. The photograph is a marked departure from Mazzera’s freelance work, which mainly consists of portraits of Bay Area residents. “I’m inspired by interesting characters,” she explains. “People who are comfortable in their own skin.” To see more of Mazzera’s work, visit www.mazzera.com.—Lauren Boyle
