2010.08.07 Berkeley Playhouse Presents Disney's Aladdin
August 7 - September 5 / Weekends A street urchin falls in love with a princess but it'll take a magic genie to win her hand amongst all her rich and powerful suitors... or will it? The animated movie comes to life on stage at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts this summer with all your favorite characters and tunes. Jennifer King directs the professional West Coast Premiere of Disney's Aladdin with Amy Dalton directing music and Dane Paul Andres directing choreography, to tell the classic Arabian tale with Disney charm, Broadway spectacle, and lots of Bollywood-style buoyancy!
2010.08.20 "Intersection: Where Art Meets History" Echoes of "The Kinsey Collection"
To spotlight the collections of well-known collectors, Thelma Harris Art Gallery will host a two-day event. The 13th annual White Linen Nights exhibition is titled “Intersection: Where Art Meets History – Echoes of The Kinsey Collection.” Attendees will be treated to an exhibit of artists’ works that represent the amazing collection of Florida natives Bernard and Shirley Kinsey. Those familiar with the collection, which will be on display at the Smithsonian Institution beginning in October, know it encompasses more than 100 rare books, sculptures, paintings, documents, manuscripts and vintage photographs that document the story of African Americans in the Americas from 1632 to present day. White Linen Nights is an opportunity to experience a taste of this inspiring artwork. On Friday, a reception will be held at the gallery from 7 to 9 p.m. Dress attire is, what else, white linen. Then, on Saturday, the gallery will host a collector’s talk and book signing with the Kinseys. 2010.08.24 Lauren Crew Photography Opening
Happy Accident is collection of images that are pretty pictures. Straying from her usual style of conceptual storytelling, Crew wanted a more loose approach for this show. She wanted to focus less on concept and more on mundane visuals or more simply, pretty pictures. A recently pink slipped art educator, she has been on summer vacation and decided to have a show that gave herself and the viewer a vacation from thinking. “It’s not that I don’t take art and artists seriously – its just that l believe that life is art and that is a given, so let’s have fun with it! I wanted this show to not take itself too seriously. Art is either by accident or through purpose and this show just happens to be by accident.” Lauren lives in Oakland, comes from quite possibly the greatest group of friends and family and loves music, swimming and traveling. When she is not at a Farmer’s Market, she is available for commissioned work, weddings and creative, photographic projects. Happy Accident is just a sample plate of Crew’s work.
