Shadow Dancing

Sculpture by Feng Jin

Each of Feng Jin’s 2,000 metal sculptures is as unique as a human life. “I don’t care about money,” says the 41-year-old artist, “as long as I can make the piece and have people enjoy it.” His love for art goes back to his childhood in China where he grew up as the son of a machine shop worker and studied art at the Central Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing. Jin has lived in the Bay Area for 11 years and moved to Alameda four years ago, attracted by the Island’s quiet and beautiful landscape. His bronze sculptures embody his vision of life, love and human beings. At first glance, his pieces look like black-and-white paintings, but when you look closer, you can see they are composed of steel wires bent to create his impression of the female form. Put the sculpture in front of white space and it creates a shadow. “Everything that has a shadow has life,” he says.
