Island Choices Multiply

Is there a single fast-food chain eatery missing from the line-up now open at Alameda’s Bridgeside Center on Blanding Avenue? It seems that mini-versions of just about every one imaginable have found a home in what most people refer to as the “Nob Hill center.” Among well-known names like Subway and Round Table Pizza, it is a welcome surprise to stumble upon New Sushi King (2661 Blanding Ave., suite E, 510-521-8889). It is a stand-alone (not linked to Sushi King in the Alameda Marketplace on Park Street) and has an extensive menu for a relatively small place. Top-of-the-line items price-wise (each $18.95) are the King’s Deluxe sushi dinner special—six pieces of sushi, six of sashimi and six slices of California roll; and the Hamachi Sashimi dinner special (you get soup, salad and rice with your yellow tail). There is every combination of roll you could dream of, and then some (priced from $3.50 for the oshinko [yellow pickle] roll, to $10.95 for the Forget Me Not: breaded unagi, crab meat, seared tuna, avocado, spicy tuna and tobiko). New Sushi King has a sushi bar as well as tables, is open daily for lunch and dinner and offers beer, wine and sake.

Over on the other side of town, the opening of the Island’s own Everett & Jones Barbecue outlet (1930 Main St., 510-814-6149) has delighted fans tired of traveling to Oakland for their favorite meaty treats. Go there for take-out or to eat in and receive a warm welcome plus all the favorites we’ve come to expect—roasted pork (large portion $10.25); beef (extra-large portion $13.50); chicken (large portion $9.50); ribs (extra-large portion $13.25). Sides include collard greens, corn, yams and potato salad.
