Beauty Contest
As longtime residents of Alameda and business owners, my wife and I really enjoy reading the articles in Alameda Magazine. Alameda is a treasure in the Bay Area. But please, is it really necessary to have the picture of almost 170 real estate salespeople in every issue? I fully understand the financial implications of ad revenues, but I question the need for this beauty contest. It degrades the quality of your fine magazine.

Barber Fan
I enjoyed reading your article, "A Shave and a Haircut" [March/April 2006], on the barbers in Alameda. However, I believe my barbershop, Vic's Barber Shop, on Santa Clara Avenue between Park and Oak Streets, should have been included. The proprietor is a fine barber as well as a very nice person. I have gone to him for a long time. He has been in Alameda a long time, though not always at the same location.

Praise for Pasta Pelican
I enjoyed your article about the Pasta Pelican restaurant [December 2005]. It was well deserved. Hadi and Rahman Natouf are solid members of the community and very supportive of the USS Hornet Museum. Last year, the Hornet held its 35th anniversary commemoration of the Apollo 11 flight. Hadi donated the upstairs dining room, plus dinner, so all the "original crew" from the Apollo 11 recovery could get together again for the first time since 1969. It was a magical evening for the key guys who plucked the first moonwalkers, and their lunar rocks, from the Pacific Ocean and returned them safely to the United States, the final step in President Kennedy's commitment.

Art Collector
I very much look forward to receiving Alameda Magazine each month. My wife and I have lived in our Bay Farm island home for two years now, with nothing on our white walls, and so her complaints that it looks as sterile a hospital are getting louder. As an Alameda resident for seven years, I have fallen in love with our local vistas and would like to purchase some artwork that features Alameda. In the past, Alameda Magazine has included Beth Bourland's paintings of various Alameda street scenes and Lisa Baker's beautiful ferry scene on the Alamedia page. These are examples of exactly the type of art I would like to purchase.
