NIGHT IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE PICTURES, says Alameda photographer Lane Hartwell, who often roams the Island after dark looking to capture images of abandoned architectural structures and unusual people. "The camera captures stuff that we can't see with our eyes," she says. "When you're shooting at night, the color is vivid and dramatic, more so than you would ever imagine it." Hartwell's experience with low light made it easy to take this photograph of the Bay Farm Island Bridge a little after dusk in fall 2005.
A West Coast native, Hartwell attended San Francisco Art Institute and has "lived all over Alameda" since moving to the Island in 2003. Although she currently works at a helicopter overhaul facility in Hayward, Hartwell is attempting a career switch to full-time photography and regularly contributes to Alameda Magazine.
