Heroes and Heroines

People are what make a community strong, and Oakland and the East Bay are full of individuals who give selflessly of themselves to better their neighborhoods and improve the world.
Those are exactly the types of folks we celebrate in our article “Hometown Heroes,” commissioning Martinez-based freelancer Linda Childers to turn up some inspiring stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Her five stirring subjects—whose accompanying environmental portraits are the work of photographer Pat Mazzera—collectively represent the giving spirit of the region, and their personal tales may prompt you to ponder what you can do to make a difference at home.
Most readers will no doubt notice the bulk of the magazine is devoted to our ever-growing annual East Bay Medical Guide, a publication that offers the latest on health matters ranging from vision correction to cosmetic dentistry to hypertension. A major component this year is “The East Bay’s Best Doctors.” Is your physician one of the 206 on the list? Medical writer Susan E. Davis interviews five of the top docs, sitting down to question them about major developments in their fields. The guide also contains a directory of East Bay–based hospitals and a comprehensive physicians directory. Our hope is that readers will keep the Medical Guide around all year as a go-to medical resource and an insurance policy for continued good health.
