Find Style on Ninth Street

A block of historic Old Oakland is a one-stop style destination for clothing, culture, accessories, and art.

Old Oakland is full of charm on Ninth Street between Washington and Broadway. Wide, brick-lined sidewalks, historic street lamps, and Victorian architecture welcome visitors. One short block showcases some of the best of Oakland, including restaurants and cafes, professional services, and fitness opportunities. The Old Oakland Farmers Market brings in local produce and goods every Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the friendly neighborhood feel makes this a perfect retail destination. Stop by and stroll a few Ninth Street highlights.

1. For fabulous women’s fashions, stop in at Muse.

“Those who love a bit of glamour and beauty will love the old-meets-new feel of Muse,” said owner Jenn Kubat. “We curate independent brands alongside rare and designer vintage, and we offer a hands-on approach to every customer who walks in the door.”

Pretty blush and gold wallpaper adorns the walls, and you’ll find a mix of day and evening looks in a range of prices, plus accessories for all occasions. In October 2019, Muse relocated from Berkeley to the Ninth Street store.

“I love the community aspect of Old Oakland and the beautiful storefronts that adorn this charming street,” Kubat said about her new location.

2. More than menswear, Bosk boasts street wear, game day gear, work wear, and some stylish women’s fashions.

The welcoming shop has local art on the wall, a range of hats, backpacks, and shades to choose from, and friendly staff to help you out. Bosk in Old Oakland is part of the much-loved Oaklandish brand, which includes the Oaklandish stores, Oakland Supply Co. in Jack London Square, and a second Bosk shop in Emeryville.

3. Step up your style with art from E14 Gallery.

The boutique gallery primarily features art from local artists and artists of color, explained Viviana Rodriguez-Smith, who co-owns E14 along with husband and artist Shomari Smith.

“Our gallery is all about Oakland love and highlighting Oakland values: history, culture, resistance, and resilience,” said Rodriguez-Smith.

Showcased artists rotate regularly, and you’ll also find gifts and local clothing designs. Get connected on social media to learn about upcoming events and exhibits. Be sure to stop by in April for a new exhibit by Shomari Smith, whose portraits of the “Hamptons 5” (basketball greats Curry, Thompson, Green, Durant, and Iguodala) now reside in the Chase Center in San Francisco.
