Jay Malan, the property’s owner and general contractor, worked with Rick Dumas, principal at Oakland’s AE3 Partners, to remove and replace an ill-conceived and unpermitted addition to the home. The final design expanded the home’s original 1,700 square feet to just under 4,000.
“The old ‘addition’ was literally made of chicken wire and 4-by-4 fence posts,” laughed Malan. “If you gave it a good shake, the whole house moved.”
The redesigned home is tastefully, and appropriately, scaled to its surroundings—a masterful, reinterpretation of Craftsman style, married to the tenets of modern simplicity.
Up a flight of stairs, through an oversized orange portal, the new square footage is apparent. Dark, plank wood floors unify the home’s flow.
