How much does Berkeley love Toro Y Moi? In 2017, the city officially named June 27 “Chaz Bundick Day” (he since has changed his name to Chaz Bear) in honor of his contributions to music and the arts.

Bear isn’t originally from the Bay Area but recently moved back here from Portland, so Berkeley can still claim him. At his 2018 Treasure Island set under the moniker Laff Trax (a collaboration with Nosaj Thing), he told the crowd cheekily, “See you at Berkeley Bowl!”

Later this month, the chillwave musician is releasing his sixth studio album, Outer Peace, his first since 2017 album Boo Boo. Toro Y Moi has already dropped several singles, including “Freelance,” an ode to the gig economy. On this funky, energetic disco track, Bear’s clipped, robotic vocals deliver lines such as “Nothing’s ever worse than work unnoticed,” and “Freelance now, yeah I guess you earned it.” The song, which is accompanied by a colorful, quirky music video directed by Harry Israelson, is about the disposability of modern culture.

“While listening, you might pay attention or ignore — either way that’s OK, this is music for a creative mind,” he said in an interview with Pitchfork. Toro Y Moi is also embarking on a national tour his month, with one date at Oakland’s New Parish and two dates at The Fillmore in San Francisco.
