Modern Times Beer has opened an Oakland tasting room.

Called the House of Perpetual Refreshment, it’s the seventh location for the popular six-year-old beer-and-coffee company that originated in San Diego and became California’s first employee-owned brewery in 2017.

Featuring thirty-plus brews on tap along with cold-brew coffees, bagged coffee beans, and crowler fills, the assertively psychedelic space near Lake Merritt features such vivid colors and wild kaleidoscopic designs that it would wake you up even without the consumption of caffeine.

Named after a utopian community built on Long Island, NY in 1850, Modern Times conscientiously sources and roasts single-origin coffee beans on a fifteen-kilo Giesen roaster in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood, and also sells coffee online. The company’s many beers range from the tropical-ish Fortunate Islands to the citrus-y Booming Rollers to the hazy Spaceways and beyond.

Earlier this year, the San Diego Reader called Modern Times a “juggernaut” brewery worth over $200 million, currently experiencing “explosive growth.” The company’s products are sold at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and even Disneyland.

Although vegan cuisine is served at Modern Times restaurant/tasting rooms in Los Angeles, Portland, Encinitas, and Santa Barbara, food is not served at this new Oakland location. Outside food is permitted, however.
