Who let the dogs out? The Oakland Museum of California marks the dawning of the Year of the Dog with a pan-Asian festival featuring traditional New Year’s celebrations from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, and other Asian cultures represented in the Bay Area.

Musical groups ranging from traditional Japanese Imperial court music to modern K-pop will perform on the stage, and other entertainers will include dancers, magicians, martial artists, and even yo-yo experts. Bring the kids for cooking demonstrations, where the kids can brew their own Gong Fu tea and make their own Vietnamese spring rolls, or explore a petting zoo with live farm animals. Don’t be surprised by the vagaries of fate and fortune: Find out what lies ahead for you this year with a reading by a traditional fortune-teller. On the crafts side, you can make a Tibetan prayer flag or build a Korean good luck bag with help from local artists and experts.

But perhaps the best way to ring in the Year of the Dog is to start it off with a new furry friend, and the Family Dog Rescue will be onsite with adoptable dogs looking for loving families.
