Hack Attack

The city of Alameda’s website was shut down by a hacker over the weekend of Nov. 8 and 9. Users who visited the website may have encountered the message, “Hacked by D@rk sHad0W.” The hacker may have taken advantage of a flaw in the content management system that has since been corrected.

Pointed Recommendation

And the finalist for developing a waterfront town center is Alameda Point Partners. At least that’s the staff advice for 800 homes and 200,000 square feet of commercial development on a 68-acre portion of the Point. Now the issue goes to the City Council.

Speaking of the Point

The Navy handed over ownership of 624 acres of Alameda Point to the Department of Veterans Affairs where the VA plans to build a medical and benefits center, a national cemetery, and a wildlife preserve.

Mercy Killing or Murder?

Jerry “JC” Canfield, 72, turned himself in to Alameda police in early November after apparently shooting his wife, Joan, also 72, who reportedly suffered from dementia, thus ending their nearly four decades of marriage. He has been charged with murder, although Canfield insists that he and his wife had agreed killing would be their response to severe instances of pain and suffering.

He’s Outta There

Alameda Fire Chief Mike D’Orazi announced he is retiring effective Dec. 27 after 3-1/2 years in the top job and a 35-year city career. His replacement is Deputy Chief Doug Long, who was named Acting Fire Chief. Long started out as a firefighter in 1988.

And So Is She

Mayor Marie Gilmore conceded the razor-thin mayor’s race to Trish Spencer, the new mayor-elect and schools trustee, in a short news conference on the steps of City Hall on Nov. 12. She also congratulated other winners and does not view her loss as a mandate.

Just Opened

Looks like there’s a lot happening in or around Park Street commerce, with new businesses as diverse as Sabai Salon & Blow Dry Bar and Little Psychic Shop to Alameda Personal Training and Helios Images opening their doors recently.

And Coming Soon

New businesses on the Park Street horizon include Alameda Cinema Grill, Alameda Grocery, Alameda Island Brewing Company, Angela’s Kitchen, Crisipan Bakery, Divine De-Lites, Tootsies, and Town Tavern.
