Suds With Buds

Suds With Buds

Faction Brewing tasting room in Alameda.

Head to SF or Alameda for brew to-dos.

April is beer season as the International Beer Festival gets underway in San Francisco. They say that all civilizations around the world have one thing in common: They all figured out how to brew beer. Whatever language you speak, the common language of beer reaches across borders and breaks down barriers, uniting us all in one sudsy, chugging family. Kumbayah!

April 8, 7-10 p.m., $75-$150, Fort Mason Center, Festival Pavilion, 2 Marina Blvd.,  San Francisco, SFBeerFest.com.

But if you’re more interested in making rather than drinking beer, the World Cup of Beer Homebrew Competition Finals is open to anyone looking to experiment with new ways to brew. Whether you’re making moonshine in your backyard still or fermenting fruit in your bathtub or just hiding ketchup behind a radiator, you’ll have your chance to test your homemade concoctions in this championship of amateurs. Presented by the Bay Area Mashers, the competition is open to everyone in all styles and sub-styles of beer, mead, and cider. And Best of Show winner gets an engraved plaque on the Sierra Nevada World Cup Trophy on display at Oak Barrel in Berkeley.

April 1, 10 a.m., free. Faction Brewing, 2501 Monarch St., Alameda, WorldCupOfBeer.com.
